Starting small in 1976, the original manufacturing plant had a little over 14,000 square feet of production space, five employees, one saw and three truss assembly stations.
After expanding the original plant an additional 18,000 square feet in the early 80s, by 2003 Shelter was bursting at the seams. It became clear that a new facility was needed.

In July of 2005, only seven months after breaking ground, Shelter began production in a brand new, state-of-the-art facility.
Committed to the tagline, Modern Technology for Today’s Builder, Shelter’s new 120,000 square foot manufacturing facility is outfitted in cutting edge component manufacturing technology.

Applying concepts from all over the manufacturing spectrum, the goal of “just in time” lean manufacturing was accomplished.
The use of robotics and automation in our cutting and building processes ensures accurate geometry and consistency in each truss system.

Shelter Systems’ industry-leading cycle time provides their customers flexible construction scheduling, while allowing the highest quality product to hit the job site exactly when it is needed.
The new Shelter campus also included 11,000 square feet of office space, eight acres of porous pave storage for finished product staging, and 13 acres of property for future expansion.

Shelter Systems processes more than 165,000 board feet of lumber daily, or around eight full truckloads between two production shifts. All lumber is stored inside in our climate-controlled manufacturing facility, and we use only the finest kiln-dried, stress rated Southern Yellow Pine. Our indoor lumber storage along with our porous, paved finished good yard and our “just in time” promise ensures premium quality building components are delivered to the job site every time.
